Laurel Wood, LCSW
I am Laurel Wood. I am a licensed Clinical Social Worker practicing in southern Connecticut. I integrate a variety of evidence- based approached in my practice, including Acceptance Commitment therapy, which draws from behavioral analysis, Mindfulness, cognitive diffusion, acceptance, and commitment methods, just to name a few. With my help, you’ll pick up a collection of coping skills specifically designed for your situation.
Individuals who suffer from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and generalized anxiety can benefit from this type of therapy because of its encouragement of keeping people in the present. The foundation of my approach is client-centered, solution focused, non-judgmental, and always comes from a place of support and compassion. I think of myself as clinician who has a toolbox, and we can pull out whichever tool seems to fit for the moment, or situation you are in currently. My goal is to be sure you also what tools are in YOUR toolbox so that you can use them as needed once our time together comes to an end.
I appreciate working with individuals and couples struggling with complicated relationships and overwhelming realities of life. I work with the geriatric population around areas of grief and loss who have suffered from a medical illness, and the caregivers who take care of them. I also enjoy working with adults who have been diagnosed with a major mental illness such as Major Depression, Bipolar Disease, Schizophrenia, and Schizoaffective Disorder.
I graduated from Hofstra University in 1991, and Columbia University in 1993 with a Master’s degree in Social Work. I have 30 years of experience working in Acute in-patient Psychiatry and Partial Hospital Programs, as well as a Detox and Dual Diagnosis unit to include child/adolescent, adult, and geriatric populations. I managed these units for Elmcrest Psychiatric Hospital, St Francis Hospital, Manchester Hospital, And most recently at Masonic Care. For the past 20 years I have worked as senior Vice President of Operations for MEdOptions, V.P. Operations at Harvest Healthcare, and New England Geriatrics.
I successfully implemented and help grow these companies to service residents living in Skilled Nursing Homes, and Assisted Living Facilities. Currently, I work for Impact Mental Health as a clinician, working bedside to elder residents, and adults suffering from major mental illness.
Outside of work, I enjoy Breeding and showing Champion Bernese Mountain Dogs. I have a husband and a 7-year-old Step daughter. We keep busy with dogs show on most weekends, and activities with our daughter.
It is a pleasure to serve you and your family.
