Recognizing a Spiritual Awakening and Adjusting Your Mental Health to Meet It

Posted by  Soribel Martinez, LCSW

Some people call it “enlightenment”.

Others refer to it as some kind of nirvana.

Whatever you want to call it, a spiritual awakening refers to a newfound way of thinking in terms of your spirituality. It becomes your new reality and can change how you view almost everything in life.

For some, this kind of awakening happens quickly, and when it’s least expected. Others might work toward it until a moment of “waking up” occurs.

Whatever the case, it’s important to be able to recognize a spiritual awakening. Because it can change your perspective on so many things, you may need to adjust your mental health to meet it.

With that in mind, let’s look at some of the common signs of an awakening, and what it means for your mental wellness.

You’ll Lose Things

Typically, losing something isn’t viewed as a good thing.

When it comes to a spiritual awakening, though, you’ll tend to lose things that may have been weighing down both your spiritual and mental health.

For example, you might lose your ability to worry. Or, you might lose interest in things like conflict, judgments, or the interest of trying to interpret how others might see you.

These losses can benefit you both spiritually and mentally, especially if you tend to struggle with anxiety. A spiritual awakening can make it easier to manage your anxiety if you focus on it when negative thoughts threaten to plague your mind.

You’ll Let Things Happen

You’ll soon find after going through a spiritual awakening that it’s much easier to let things happen naturally.

That can help with feelings of anxiety and stress, especially if you’ve considered yourself to be a perfectionist in the past. Things might happen in your life that would have thrown you off before. But, being spiritually enlightened allows you to let them be without worrying about them too much.

You might even find that you enjoy experiencing the “unknown” or being surprised. It can make life more exciting and more refreshing, and you might learn to appreciate more of the little things.

You’ll Gain the Ability to Love Without Expectations

One of the most important aspects of a spiritual awakening is the sheer love you’ll feel afterward. That includes love for the people in your life, love for strangers, love for the planet, and even love for yourself.

It’s not uncommon for many mental health conditions to cause negative self-talk. You might be used to feeling down about yourself or dealing with low self-esteem. An awakening can change all of that as you learn to love everything about yourself.

In addition to feeling an overwhelming sense of love, you’re likely to feel a stronger connection to both people and nature. That can create a calming effect that helps you to remain peaceful even in stressful situations. It will also help you be more mindful. You’ll have an easier time focusing on the present and being fully aware of yourself and your surroundings.

Mindfulness is already a wonderful technique for managing your mental health. Having a spiritual awakening makes it easier to naturally put it into practice.

Are You Having Trouble Adjusting?

If you believe you’ve experienced a spiritual awakening, chances are you can’t stop smiling. But, it’s still important to adjust your mental health to meet it.

That’s something you don’t have to do on your own. While an awakening is life-changing and wonderful, it’s also something that feels new and unfamiliar. It’s okay to need some help working your way through it, especially getting your mental health to meet up with it. I’m here to do just that. Feel free to contact me to set up an appointment.
