5 Sex Issues Women Struggle With
Posted by Soribel Martinez, LCSW

Sex therapy can be beneficial for both men and women. Anyone who is struggling with their sex life, performance anxiety, or even relationship problems can get something out of sex therapy.
Many couples attend this type of therapy together. But, there are some problems that will always be more specific to men, and some that are more specific to women.
Understanding specific sex therapy issues for women can help you get to the root of your struggles faster. You can learn how to cope with them and move forward in your sex life, whether that’s with your current partner or by getting out of your current relationship.
With that in mind, let’s look at five sex therapy issues that are specific to women.
1. Low Libido

Low libido is one of the most common problems women struggle with when they first come to sex therapy. There can be a variety of issues that contribute to low libido, including mental health problems, low self-esteem, relationship issues, or even excessive stress.
While men can experience a low sex drive, it’s more common in women. But it doesn’t need to be that way forever. A sex therapist can help with the psychological issues that might be associated with libido. The sooner you get to the “root cause”, the easier it will be to boost your sex drive.
2. Lack of Interest
A lack of interest in having sex is slightly different from low libido. Rather than your body’s desires, it’s your mind that is playing a more active role.
If you’re just not interested in having sex with your partner, it’s important to focus on relationship issues before body issues. There could be more underlying problems than you realize.
3. Low Self-Confidence

Women tend to struggle with body image issues and self-confidence more than men. Maybe you’ve been in a relationship before where your appearance was criticized. Maybe you don’t feel as experienced as your partner. Or, maybe your own personal body image issues have slipped into your sex life.
Whatever the case, low levels of confidence can make any intimate moment seem difficult and even overwhelming. You might find it hard to be present, and chances are your partner will pick up on that.
4. Inability to Orgasm
Many women have been given false information when it comes to intercourse and orgasms. It’s been widely accepted that it’s a rarity to orgasm during sex, so women don’t worry about it or even think about it as much as they should.

You might not have an orgasm every time you have a sexual encounter. But, if you’re never experiencing them, it could be a sign of something bigger going on. It might have something to do with your relationship, a performance issue, or even a psychological issue that you haven’t been able to address. So, while orgasms don’t have to happen every time you have sex, you should be experiencing them regularly.
5. Unwanted Sexual Thoughts
Some women start to attend sex therapy because they feel like they’re having “abnormal” thoughts about sex. That could include thoughts about their relationship, about other people, or even fantasies they aren’t completely comfortable with.

Sex therapy can help you work through those unwanted thoughts by getting to the bottom of what they really mean. Once you’re able to do that, you can work through them and have a better understanding of what you really want/need.
